WPI Journal: Summer 2020

Cover, lead, and spots that tell the story of WPI's return to campus
the brief

In the Summer of 2020, Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA published an issue of the the WPI Journal that detailed their efforts to return students to campus safely and effectively.

I created a cover spread, interior spread, and a series of spots to help tell that story.

cover sketches

This issue focused on WPI’s efforts—like crafting PPE, improving sanitation, and moving classes to Zoom—to achieve their “North Star” goal of safely bringing students back to campus. For the cover, I wanted to show snapshots of those efforts radiating from a central, star-like core on the front cover.

Lead Sketch

For the interior spread, which highlighted the massive coordination behind WPI’s North Star goal, I aimed to show a mosaic of characters—each representing a different role—interlinked by a constellation-like path to show their unity and shared direction.

Final lead design

The final spread traces the return-to-campus journey from left to right—starting with administrators, engineers, medical and custodial staff, and gradually shifting to parents and students coming back to campus.
