For this cover, the Washington Post wanted to highlight three cruise experiences featured within: an Amazon River Cruise hosted on a small cargo ship, a Latvian day-cruise / ferry, and a celebrity wellness cruise.
As I sketched, I wanted to achieve a sense of scale that felt grand, like the ships featured in old art deco ads. I also used scale to signal the quality of each cruise experience.
The initial color versions didn’t do enough to highlight the differences between each experience, so we landed on a bold triadic palette that helped each ship stand out on its own.
